In the whirlwind of motherhood, finding time for yourself can feel impossible. Between school runs, meal prep, and endless to-do lists, it’s easy to lose sight of your own needs. However, one simple practice can help you reconnect with yourself: journaling. This powerful tool can provide clarity, reduce stress, and enhance mindfulness. In this post, we will explore practical journaling tips specifically designed for busy moms.
Why I believe journaling matters
Journaling is more than just writing down your thoughts. It is a way to process emotions, reflect on experiences, and set intentions. For moms, it can be a sanctuary in the daily chaos.
Emotional Release: Writing can help you express feelings that might be hard to verbalize.
Clarity and Focus: Journaling allows you to sort through your thoughts and prioritize what matters most.
Mindfulness: Taking a moment to write can ground you in the present, helping you appreciate the little things.
Adding journaling to your routine can create a sense of peace even on the busiest of days.
Finding Your Perfect Journal
There are so many options of journals to choose from.
Digital: There are so many apps these days that you can always do your journaling digitally. If you prefer that, you can write from anywhere, even while sitting there at one of your kids' games, or in between drop-offs.
Notebooks: If you prefer pen and paper like I do, find yourself a notebook that you can fit in your bag, and possibly with a cute little design and inspirational quotes. I created a Wellness Journal in my store that you can purchase, which is simple and easy for a starting journal.
Prompt notebook: These are notebooks that come with questions or prompts to guide your writing. They can be very helpful if you just don't know where to start and need a little direction.

Creating a journaling routine can help you stay consistent. Here are some tips to establish a habit:
Choose a Time: Find a time that works for you. It could be in the morning with your coffee, during your lunch break, or before bed.
Start Small: If you’re new to journaling, start with just five minutes a day.
Create a Cozy Space: Designate a spot for journaling. It could be a corner of your kitchen table or a cozy chair in your living room. Make it inviting with a blanket or a candle.
The idea is to make it a part of your day by making it a part of your daily routine.
When you’re short on time, some quick journaling techniques can help you stay engaged:
Bullet Points: Instead of writing long paragraphs, list your thoughts, feelings, or things you’re grateful for.
Stream of Consciousness: Set a timer for five minutes and write whatever comes to mind. Just let your thoughts flow.
Gratitude Lists: Write down three things you are grateful for each day.
Sometimes, you may need a little inspiration to get started- you can add simple things like these below.
What made me smile today?
What is one thing I can do for myself this week?
How do I feel right now?
What are my goals for the next month?
What is something I learned today?
Using prompts can help you explore your thoughts and feelings more deeply.
Incorporating Mindfulness and Wellness
Mindfulness is about being present and aware. Here are ways to incorporate mindfulness into your journaling practice:
Breathe Before You Write: Take a few deep breaths before you start journaling. It can help you focus on the moment.
Focus on your senses: When you sit down to write, pay attention to what you see, hear, and feel. It will ground you.
Positive Affirmations: Ending your journaling with a positive statement about yourself can boost your mood.
Journaling doesn’t always have to mean just writing your thoughts down. You can try an art journal that lets you tap into your creative side instead. Sometimes, simply drawing or painting is the calm your mind needs after a long, busy week—and it’s a great way to support your wellness.
You can even include your kids in your journaling moments. It’s a fun and meaningful way to spend time together while helping them express their feelings through colors and creativity. Make it a little family wellness ritual—grab some markers, paints, or stickers, and let everyone create freely. You might be surprised by how relaxing and connecting it can be for all of you.
For me, journaling has become a big part of my wellness routine. It’s my quiet space to slow down, breathe, and just be honest with myself. Some days I write about what’s on my mind, and other days I just draw or paint whatever I’m feeling. Sometimes my journaling time turns into a creative moment where I finally focus on a crafting idea I’ve wanted to try for a long time. It’s all part of the same process—letting my mind wander, creating something with my hands, and giving myself space to recharge.
I’ve realized journaling isn’t just about writing things down—it’s how I take care of my mind and emotions. It helps me pause, reflect, and let go of what’s been weighing me down. It’s my little act of self-care that keeps me grounded and feeling balanced.
If you’ve been thinking about starting your own journaling routine, just begin where you are. There’s no right or wrong way to do it—only your way. Whether it’s words, doodles, or a splash of paint, give yourself that moment to breathe and create. You might be surprised by how healing it feels
Happy journaling!
