Self-Care During the Holidays: Protecting Your Peace as a Mom

December can feel like a sprint. Even before the first snowflake hits the ground, the lists start piling up: gifts, meals, activities, family visits, traditions. And as moms, so much of that load lands on us.
But here’s the truth: if you don’t take care of yourself during the holidays, it’s nearly impossible to enjoy them. Your joy, your patience, your presence—they all need fuel. Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s essential.
Pause Before the Rush
Before the holiday chaos begins, take a moment to notice:
How is my nervous system feeling?
Where am I already stretched thin?
What traditions or tasks could wait, shift, or be simplified?
Even small moments of awareness can help you step into the season with more energy and less tension.
Self-Care Isn’t Perfect or Fancy
Self-care doesn’t need to be an elaborate ritual. It’s the little things that help you feel grounded, calm, and replenished. Try to fit in:
Quiet moments: Five minutes of deep breathing, journaling, or just sitting with a cup of tea.
Movement you enjoy: A short walk, stretching, or dancing to a favorite song.
Boundaries: Saying no without guilt, postponing nonessential tasks, or delegating., have the kids help you!
Sleep and nutrition: Prioritize rest when you can, and nourish your body—even with simple meals.
Connection: Check in with a friend, a partner, or another mom who understands your season of life.
These small acts add up. They protect your energy, your mood, and your ability to actually be present when the holidays arrive.
Gentle Journaling Moment
Take a few minutes and reflect:
What is one thing I can do today to care for myself?
What could I let go of this week to lighten my load?
How will I show myself kindness during the next few weeks?
You don’t need to answer every question, or write perfectly. Just notice. Just breathe. Just begin.
Enjoying the Holidays Starts Now
The holidays can be joyful, but only if you show up as yourself—not a tired, overextended version of yourself. Prioritize self-care now, even in small ways.
This December, give yourself permission to rest, simplify, and refill your cup. The magic of the season is sweeter when you’re caring for yourself too.
